Lopica: processing of Luserna stone

The Depetris family and the activity of extraction of Luserna stone

The Depetris family started the activity of extraction and processing of Luserna stone in 1890, and the following generations have always kept on developing new products and technologies as well. Though in the ‘90s the company Depetris Lorenzo changed its name into “LO.PI.CA. s.n.c.”, the processing techniques which have permitted us to expand and distinguish remained unaffected. We extract the stones directly from our own quarries or from quarries in concession.

Luserna stone

The name Luserna Stone refers to one of the most popular type of lamellar gneiss arising from a surface of about 50 square kilometers between the Valleys Pellice and Po.
It is a metamorphic rock consisting of different layers of quartz, feldspar and mica.
Normally the quarried material is divided in:
32% naturally split
13% for sawing
33% rocks
22% waste

From the geological point of view Luserna stone belongs to the Dora Maira massif and is the result of the metamorphic and structural alpine transformations of an original magmatic rock.
